Picking a Name

I’m half way through cleaning up the lynx shifter story, and in the back of my mind thoughts play out over my next brilliant idea for a story. The plot is coming along fine, but the names of the characters are playing a wicked game of Guess Who? Honestly, I think they’ve gone into partnership with the title monster who is giving me a hard time on what to name the lynx story. Ugh.

Names are important. In romance, you never want a childish name. The last thing we want to remind our readers in an erotic book is one they call their children. Timmy, Billy, Danny. No, we want masculine names that make them sit up and notice. Granger, Dev, Luke, Jake, Darren, Brad.

Female names are different. Long flowery names remind us of their femininity. Jennifer, Melissa, Elizabeth. Soft sounding names are sexy. Heather, Laura, Ariel. Shortened names give us the girl next door. Samantha-Sammy,  Charlise-Charlie, Danielle-Danny. Short, blunt names are great for kick-ass characters and still hold a lot of sexy appeal. Jade, Lee, Ann, Dee.

Between the clean up of the lynx story, I have made it my goal to come up with a title. That’s pretty important when you are done with a book, huh? :-) Also, pick the two main character names for the new idea story. Sounds simple, right? *big breath* I can do it!

How do you choose your character names and titles?
