I viewed a young woman in an old body today

I have to share this story. I ran into an older lady at the store today while I was doing my Thanksgiving menu shopping that made me blush and feel twelve years old. I watched her coming down the aisle towards me. Gray haired and I’m guessing about 85 years old. A sweet grandma outfit and a smile on her face. She pushed her cart right up next to mine, and leaned over.

“Dear, how long did it take you to grow your hair that long? It’s just beautiful.”

I’m used to the attention my hair gets. It’s the one thing that everyone comments on. I swear I could have warpaint all over my face and no one would see it. Yes, my hair is down to my waist, it’s blonde, it’s thick…sue me, I’m Swedish. ;-)

“Pretty much my whole life, I just trim it occassionally to keep it out of my pants,” I said.

She reaches out to stroke my hair and her ring gets caught in the strands. She apologizes. I laugh. What she said next surprised me.

“I bet your husband gets tangled up in it too when you have sex.”

lol What was I suppose to say? She smiled, winked, and pushed her cart away. I’ve thought of her all day. We often think that the older generation is out of touch with the “real” world. They didn’t experience the freedom we had growing up, choosing what paths we walked, or what kind of social life they’d enjoy. I bet you that this sweet grandma was a wild woman in her time. She gave some man a run for his money. Maybe she dared to go skinny dipping, or snuck out of the house to secretly meet the boy down the road. I could see the young woman in her eyes when she winked.

She gave me a gift today that she doesn’t even realize. Somehow she showed me a younger version of her and I connected with that woman. Bless her!

  1. That’s the best story I’ve read in a long time. It was funny, touching, and beautiful. Makes me wish I had the experience. :)

    • Thanks Jennifer…I’m just glad I wasn’t in one of those hurried shopping trips where I ignore everyone, because I would have missed the whole conversation. Definitely, one of those moments in life that you learn something. =)
